Focus on Architecture, Photos of the Mark Twain House

mark twain house

A short walk past the massive carriage house, which is not on tour, we’re at the side of the massive gothic Victorian. Access to the Mark Twain House is by guided tours only and groups queue up on the porch, one after the other, all day long. Edward Tuckerman Potter, the design architect of the Mark Twain House, would have known about Olana, the Hudson River Valley mansion that architect Calvert Vaux was building for painter Frederic Church. Potter's architecture practice was centered in his hometown of Schenectady, New York, and the Mark Twin House was built in 1874 in Hartford, Connecticut.

North American Reciprocal Museum Program (NARM)

Here is a brief chronology of the life of Samuel Clemens, Mark Twain. The museum store is open during normal museum hours and features Twain memorabilia, gifts for the reader and writer, and a large selection of books by and about Mark Twain. Join us from late November to January when the house is decorated for a Victorian holiday. Allow two hours for tour of the house and a visit to the museum center. Alice and Arnold Hamilton had one son at the time; they soon had another, Fred, and then a daughter.

If you visit the Mark Twain House

At the Mark Twain House, the conservatory is a round structure with glass walls and roof. "Glass Houses," like the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in Pittsburgh, were very popular in America's Victorian era. For private homes, the conservatory room was a sure sign of affluence and culture. For the Mark Twain House in Hartford, the exterior of the conservatory room became a fine architectural addition that complemented the nearby turret.

The Mark Twain House in Hartford, Connecticut, is now a popular attraction and is designated a National Historic Landmark. His youngest daughter, Jean, was diagnosed with severe epilepsy. In 1909, when she was 29 years old, Jean died of a heart attack.

Please note that the parking lot entrance is located a few hundred feet to the west of the Mark Twain House itself. For Passengers with Limited MobilityFollow the above directions, but continue east on Farmington Avenue and go past the Mark Twain House. Take your first right onto Forest Street and look for the sign on the right for the entrance to the Museum Center’s rear parking lot at 65 Forest Street. Built in 1874 by architect Edward Tuckerman Potter, the Mark Twain House in Hartford, Connecticut is an interesting feast for the eyes. Potter's colors, brick ornamentation, and brackets, trusses and balcony-filled gables are the architectural equivalent of Mark Twain's well-built, exciting American novels. Fashionable Victorian homes often included a conservatory, or small greenhouse.

Shortly thereafter he left school to work as a printer’s apprentice for a local newspaper. His job was to arrange the type for each of the newspaper’s stories‚ allowing Sam to read the news of the world while completing his work. During his lifetime‚ Sam Clemens watched a young United States evolve from a nation torn apart by internal conflicts to one of international power.

Today, the billiard room might be called Mark Twain's "home office" or maybe even a "man cave," as the third floor was at a level separate from the rest of the house. The billiard room was often filled with as much cigar smoke as the writer and his guests could tolerate. The similarities are striking, with colored bricks and stenciling inside and out. In architecture, the popular is usually what gets built and surely it's what gets adapted by the eager architect. Perhaps Vaux himself was familiar with the Nott Memorial in Schenectady, the domed structure Potter designed in 1858.

Harriet Beecher Stowe Center Next Door

As you look through the open doorway it is easy to imagine young Sam Clemens writing his story by the fireplace. After that, business and writing were of equal value to Twain as he set about his cardinal task of earning a lot of money. In 1885, he triumphed as a book publisher by issuing the bestselling memoirs of former President Ulysses S. Grant, who had just died. Livy, like many people during that time, took pride in her pious, high-minded, genteel approach to life. Twain hoped that she would "reform" him, a mere humorist, from his rustic ways.

Center for Mark Twain Studies

Visitors on tour approach the entry via a long porch decorated in the stick style – meaning the railings and other décor are simple and sticklike. They pass terracotta-colored and black brick patterns in the wall, and then gather under a porte-cochere with gingerbread highlights before entering through a massive door. When it was built in 1874, it was nothing like the Italianate houses of its era in Hartford — “goods-box”  houses, as a Twain biographer called them. Although Sam enjoyed financial success during his Hartford years‚ he continually made bad investments in new inventions‚ which eventually brought him to bankruptcy. In an effort to economize and pay back his debts‚ Sam and Livy moved their family to Europe in 1891. When his publishing company failed in 1894‚ Sam was forced to set out on a worldwide lecture tour to earn money.

Missouri‚ at the time‚ was a fairly new state (it had gained statehood in 1821) and made up part of the country’s western border. Sam’s father owned one enslaved person, and his uncle owned several. In fact‚ it was on his uncle’s farm that Sam spent many boyhood summers playing in the enslaved people’s quarters‚ listening to tall tales and the spirituals that he would enjoy throughout his life. Their home measures 11‚500 square feet‚ and has 25 rooms distributed through three floors. It displayed the latest in modern innovations when it was built in 1874.

However, his service was cut short in 1861 by the outbreak of the Civil War, which halted most civilian traffic on the river. The Clemens family "now became almost destitute," wrote biographer Everett Emerson, and was forced into years of economic struggle — a fact that would shape the career of Twain. I never met my great-grandfather, and as I knew her, my great-grandmother was eerie, intimidating and impossibly old. This photo of them was taken around the time they bought the Webster house. They look like they are cracking each other up, and Arnold looks just like his son, Fred.

Twains Timeline

A red velvet rope keeps us from going all the way into the room, but across the way, we can see the desk. It’s still set with pencils and paper; there are books and an ashtray as if he’d just stepped away. To the right is a large gift shop that sells at least one thing you should buy – Twain’s books. There are also various cups, candy, clothing, magnets and other souvenirs with fun and pithy quotes from Twain. We ask visitors to turn off cell phones while on the guided tour. Children between the ages of 2 and 6 are welcome on the hour-long tour; in fact, they get in free!

Twain Starts a Family and Moves to Hartford

The couple spent $40‚000 to $45‚000 building their new home‚ so once they moved in they kept the interior simple. Mark Twain and his family enjoyed what the author would later call the happiest and most productive years of his life in their Hartford home. Recently named one of the Ten Best Historic Homes in the World by National Geographic, the house features interior decor designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany, including elaborate stenciling and carved woodwork.

Mark Twain’s Office

From there down the back stairs to the kitchen, with its great iron stove and its pass-through to a little gem of a butler’s pantry, where Griffin received the plated dishes from the cook. He carried  these out to family and guests at the table, bringing us full circle back to the ornate dining room. The door through which he entered was shielded by a screen, in Victorian style – the divider between the family’s world and that of the people who kept things running under Livy’s supervision. Guides are careful to point out the mass of work he did in the summer in Elmira, in the private hilltop study his sister-in-law Susan Crane built for him there; a picture of the study is on the wall as a visual aid. He stuffed manuscripts into a pigeonhole shelf to be picked up again, perhaps years afterward.

‘Rebel’ redacted: Rebel Wilson’s book chapter on Sacha Baron Cohen struck from some copies

In 1872 Sam’s recollections and tall tales from his frontier adventures were published in his book Roughing It. That same year the Clemenses’ first daughter Susy was born‚ but their son‚ Langdon‚ died at age two from diphtheria. Samuel L. Clemens, aka Mark Twain, was born in 1835 in Hannibal, Missouri when Halley’s Comet soared by overhead.

Conservatory and Turret - Mark Twain House

Not long after completing the interiors, Clemens moved his family to Europe for a lecture tour due to financial problems. The family never returned to the residence and sold it 1903 to Richard Bissell. The Bissell family occupied the house until 1917 and it was subsequently leased to a boys’ school until 1922. It was then subdivided into apartments and ultimately slated for demolition. In 1929, the Friends of Hartford organized and raised funds to purchase the house.

In between the two venues is Olana, Vaux's Persian-inspired design built in 1872 in Hudson, New York. The rambling wooden porch at the Mark Twain House is reminiscent of both Gustav Stickley's Craftsman Farms-type of Arts and Crafts architecture combined with Frank Lloyd Wright's  geometric designs found on his Prairie Style homes. However, Wright, born in 1867, would have been a child when Samuel Clemens built his house in 1874. Named one of the 10 Best Historic Homes in the World by National Geographic, the Mark Twain House in Hartford is today a thriving museum that attracts visitors and Twain fans (not to mention architecture buffs) from all over the world. Became engaged to Olivia Langdon of Elmira, New York on February 4.

Hired by the Alta California to continue his travel writing from the east‚ Sam arrived in New York City in 1867. It was also on this trip that Clemens met his future brother-in-law‚ Charles Langdon. Langdon reportedly showed Sam a picture of his sister‚ Olivia‚ and Sam fell in love at first sight. In search of a new career‚ Sam headed west in July 1861‚ at the invitation of his brother‚ Orion‚ who had just been appointed secretary of the Nevada Territory. Lured by the infectious hope of striking it rich in Nevada’s silver rush‚ Sam traveled across the open frontier from Missouri to Nevada by stagecoach.

great Hollywood books we missed, according to our readers

Decorated by a group of designers led by the not-yet-famous Louis Comfort Tiffany, the house is a splendid, vivid display unto itself. Inspired by the styles of Morocco, India, Japan, China and Turkey, without being particularly faithful to any of them, the décor celebrates intricate design and detail. The front entry hall has breathtaking, Moroccan-ish designs — but painted, rather than inlaid — on the walls, staircase and ceiling.

Along the journey Sam encountered Native American tribes for the first time, along with a variety of unique characters‚ mishaps, and disappointments. These events would find a way into his short stories and books‚ particularly Roughing It. Construction began in August of that year‚ while Sam and Livy were abroad.

For many years, Twain's relationship with middle daughter Clara was distant and full of quarrels. But while those years were gilded with awards, they also brought him much anguish. Early in their marriage, he and Livy had lost their toddler son, Langdon, to diphtheria; in 1896, his favorite daughter, Susy, died at the age of 24 of spinal meningitis. The loss broke his heart, and adding to his grief, he was out of the country when it happened. In 1889, Twain published A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, a science-fiction/historical novel about ancient England.

For just $50, you can join other scribblers in the quiet library with only the bubbling sound of the conservatory fountain. Samuel L. Clemens, the future Mark Twain, was born when Halley’s comet was in the skies. In between, Clemens traveled the world and had many experiences as he passed from typesetter to river pilot, prospector, newspaper reporter, lecturer, author, publisher, businessman, and family man.

The Great Abolitionist is the first major biography of Charles Sumner to be published in over fifty years. Sometimes, it’s good to see that the most accomplished among us got that way through fortitude and discipline as much as any special skills they may have had. Twain struck a chord in American consciousness by being relatable, funny and human.

The massive house is 11‚500 square feet and has 25 rooms on three floors. There are 50,000 artifacts, including manuscripts, historic photographs, family furnishings and Tiffany glass inside. Unfortunately, they don’t allow interior photography, so the only way to see it is to take a tour. SAH Archipedia tells the story of the United States through its buildings, landscapes, and cities. This freely available resource empowers the public with authoritative knowledge that deepens their understanding and appreciation of the built environment.

It contains an old printing press machine Twain invested in, some typesetting and letterpress equipment and his old desk. The museum displays various items like his glasses, pipes, tin boxes, and writing utensils. When Twain and Stowe lived in Hartford, the area would have a wooded wonderland with a small but booming downtown and a thriving literary community.

Prior to coming to The Times, Kellogg was editor of LAist.com and the web editor of the public radio show Marketplace. She has an MFA in creative writing from the University of Pittsburgh and a BA in English from the University of Southern California. That book, of course, is “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,” which tells the story of a slave who is denied his freedom — as others around him try to escape, he is sold into increasingly appalling conditions.

The Mark Twain Home in Hartford, Connecticut is often described as an example of Gothic Revival or Picturesque Gothic architecture. However, the patterned surfaces, ornamental trusses, and large decorative brackets are characteristics of another Victorian style known as Stick. But, unlike most Stick Style buildings, the Mark Twain house is constructed of brick instead of wood. Some of the bricks are painted orange and black to create intricate patterns on the facade. The family spent a total of 17 lively years in the house, and it’s where Clemens wrote some of his best-loved works. Twain received a contract for his first book, The Innocents Abroad which came out in 1869.

Disney Cruise Decorations Disney Cruise Magnets DCL Door Magnets

disney cruise line doors

Buying Disney magnets for your cruise ship door lets your door stand out and cements your memories of your Disney cruise. There are many places to find a Disney cruise door magnet, including when you’re on the ship, but we recommend getting something before you go. A fish extender is a bag or pouch (like a skinny over-the-door shoe organizer) hung from the metal fish next to each cabin door on a cruise ship. It has a pocket and people leave messages and treats for one another in the pockets. The recommended door decorations for Disney Cruises are magnetic only… but it’s important to know that not all doors are magnetic. Concierge staterooms on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy have wooden doors.

Share the love!

We cannot wait to see which magnets you choose to personalize for your Disney Cruise door decorations. We would love to see your Disney Cruise Line stateroom door and your at-home stateroom door decorations. Please share your photos with us on our KtP Planning Crew and on our Facebook Page. Numerous Etsy shops offer Disney Cruise Line door decorations featuring just about any motif you can imagine. If you want to commemorate the year of your cruise and the name of your Disney ship, we love these magnetic decals from Nick and Jojo. Magnetic door decorations are incredibly popular on Disney Cruises and they’re super fun to look at as you explore your Disney cruise ship.

Do people decorate on Disney cruises?

Many generous people were creating personalized graphics for people for free. However, I noticed that over the years on the message boards and eventually Facebook groups that personalized requests became overwhelming for the artists. So, I thought, “What if I create a page that offers free door magnet graphic but teaches people how to personalize them themselves?

Is David’s Vacation Club Rentals a Legit Disney Deal?

Carnival cruise line has put out the most extensive rules about decorating your cabin door. Some people may feel like these rules are too restrictive, but the fact that Carnival actually embraces the concept as well as they do, it’s no surprise there are rules. Welcome to High Seas Cruising, your resource for exploring the exciting world of cruise ship travel.

Celebrate Good Times

Ashely’s Haunted Mansion inspired door including traveling hitchhiking ghosts. Download all 38 pages of absolutely adorable FREE printables. You can start by printing and cutting out your stateroom number of 1998, in honor of the year the first Disney Cruise ship sailed. They also helped our children to remember which room was ours through the endless hallway of doors. Cruise Decorations should only be on your door or inside your room. They should not interfere with clear access to your room or the hallway for crew and fellow guests.

Step 2: Printing Your Door Magnet Design

Don’t forget to take them off of your door when you leave – we’ve almost forgotten them a few times! It’s always sad when you remove them and see a plain door again. As my kids have gotten older and are less excited about magnets, we’ve focused more on purchasing completed magnets from Etsy sellers. And don’t forget, the Disney Universe has expanded to include Star Wars and Marvel, so you can always add a magnet of Chewbacca, Grogu/Baby Yoda, Iron Man, or Captain America. If you want to go for classic Disney, I recommend Waltograph. You can also infuse a bit of other “Disney Magic’ into your design by using an Avengers-inspired font like Avengero.

Replies to “Decorating Your Stateroom Door with Custom Magnets”

The cruise line cited fire safety concerns as the reason for the decision. Cabin stewards are instructed to remove all decorations and place them inside the room. A whiteboard is a great way to communicate with your travel companions while traveling in a large group. You could leave a note letting your friends and family know where they can find you or when you will return to your cabin. Your cruise stateroom door is the perfect canvas to express who you are. Herb is the founder, author, webmaster, chief executive, and chief bottle washer for World Of Walt – and he is the Disney enthusiast who put this site together.

But don’t limit the door decorating to Christmas, we’ve seen both large and small decor for Valentines Day, easter, and especially Halloween. Can you tell what time of year these cruise door pictures were taken? (Disney calls these cruise itineraries “Halloween on the High Seas.” Many cruise doors reflected the Halloween theme. If you don’t have the time or the desire or the know-how you make your own magnets, you can find a wide variety of them for sale! Etsy has hundreds of personalized Disney Cruise magnets to purchase.

So now that we’ve been on seven Disney cruises as a family, we have a pretty big collection! If you plan on saving them and reusing them, I’d recommend making smaller magnets so you’ll have room for all of them as your collection grows. Every time you pass by your Disney magnet, you’ll remember your cruise and all the fun times you had. Making your own Disney Cruise Line magnets is a great way to save money for your vacation! We have a free printable template for you and the supplies to create the magnets are affordable (you might even have a lot of them around your house already).

I’ve found that unpersonalized magnets have the tendency to grow legs, and disappear. For  example, we’ve had some of the small Pascal magnets disappear. For each cruise we create one large magnet on an 8 inch by 10 inch canvas.

The reality is, while NCL published a policy against cruise decorations in 2019, there are still plenty of people who put magnets on their doors and they go ‘unnoticed’. Much more than magnets, however, will likely get the decorations removed. Just know that it’s officially against NCL rules to decorate a door, but it seems that the cabin stewards have some discretion. Some cruise lines promote door decorating fun and sell decorations to guests, however, there are some important rules to decorating your door!

Sometimes, your door decor can be more than just decoration; it can carry a secret message. Maybe it’s an inside joke among friends or the secret upside-down pineapple. The door becomes a conversation starter, a mystery for others to ponder, and a fun way for you to communicate a playful or romantic gesture. Cruise ships are celebration-friendly zones, and what better way to honor a special occasion than with a well-adorned door?

Another idea is to order a new one every cruise and put them all up on your door! Of course, there are plenty of different color choices as well. So while they have rules, how they are applied or adhered to will vary. Just be prepared to have your treasures removed since it’s the official policy on NCL. A fish extender is a hanger that allows passengers to get more space for the fish mailbox. If you’re a Royal Caribbean fan, this adorable magnet is a great way to celebrate your time on a Royal Caribbean cruise.

In addition, they must be manufactured as flame retardant and can’t be transformed using a flame-retardant spray. However, as an alternative, some cruise lines provide a service where you can purchase balloons directly from the ship. Crew members deliver the balloons to your stateroom to mark your special occasion, ensuring both compliance with cruise policies and a festive atmosphere.

Magnetic door decorations are available for purchase on-board in merchandise areas and at guest services. Cruise ships are so big that it’s common for passengers to get lost on board. Even the most experienced cruisers can have difficulty locating their cabin door in the long corridor of identical staterooms. Remember not to use any adhesives like tape or 3M, and Disney doesn’t allow any over-the-door decorations. Seven years and 30,000 members later, we are Disney Graphics you can Personalize! We are a Facebook page where artists provide free Disney graphics and you provide the personalization!

I have found that the magnet paper sheets aren’t very strong, and can often fall off the door. You can also choose to purchase custom graphics from the many sellers on Etsy that offer them. Some of the sellers offer digital files that you need to download, while others will ship you the magnets already made. Even if your materials are up to code, make sure you don’t affix them with tape or anything that could damage the door. After all, while it is your room for the week, it is still company property of the cruise line.

Best Time To Cruise To The Caribbean

best month to cruise caribbean

If you want to sidestep the hordes of sunscreen-slathered vacationers that descend on the islands each year, consider the shoulder season in late spring or fall, May or late October-November. You can bask in the warm temps and sunshine and won’t have to duke it out for a beach lounger. If you want a romantic getaway in relative quiet, plan your cruise for when school is in session to avoid noisy kiddos and raucous spring breakers. Every one of our Caribbean cruises stops into Half Moon Cay, our top-rate private island, so you will enjoy some seclusion no matter when you go. The Caribbean hurricane season is a period of the year when hurricanes are most likely to occur in the Caribbean. It runs from June 1st to November 30th, peaking between August and October.

Taking a Cruise in April

"That is, of course, unless you're opting for a hillside mountaintop retreat somewhere in the Caribbean's many rainforests,” which he says can get chilly during the winter months. When planning a Caribbean cruise, it’s important to weigh factors like weather, crowds, and prices to find the best time for you. If sunny weather is your top priority and you don’t mind dealing with larger crowds, the dry period from December to April is ideal. This time offers the best weather conditions, though it also comes with higher prices due to its popularity. This gives you that perfect blend of warm and sunny weather while minimizing your risk of rainfall and severe storms. Nighttime temperatures are also pleasant during these months, rather than muggy and humid.

Best Time to Cruise to the Caribbean

This is one of the reasons why Caribbean cruises during the summer tend to be relatively affordable. Not only is there a higher risk of rainfall and high humidity levels, but you also risk trip disruptions due to storms and hurricanes. With that said, due to the lack of demand, fewer Caribbean cruises set sail during this time of year, which can increase costs and level them out.

Summer: Fewer storms, many families and prices that may beat land-based trips

You might also find special offers for packages and amenities, such as drink packages and onboard credit. May weather on Mexico’s east coast, where the island of Cozumel sits, is also still hot and dry with temperatures in the 80s and over 11 hours of sunlight daily. Sunbathe on pristine white-sand beaches or get active with watersports like jet skiing and parasailing over the beautiful blue Caribbean Sea. The key is knowing which area to cruise to and when to get full enjoyment out of every moment of your cruise vacation. The best time to cruise the Caribbean for you can depend on your schedule, whether school or work, your travel budget, and your travel desires. At Windstar Cruises, we offer a more intimate and exclusive cruise experience from November to April.

Anyone interested in taking a Caribbean cruise in the winter should consider a southern cruise as a better option for warmer weather than either an eastern or western cruise. The Caribbean is full of festivities all year, but holiday cruises to the Caribbean really rev up the excitement on ship and ashore. Barbados has a well-earned reputation for a proper New Year’s blowout and many Caribbean islands celebrate Carnival with live music, parades, and feathery garb. The Bahamas is located in the Atlantic Ocean rather than the Caribbean Sea, but it's a popular cruise destination. The best time to cruise the Bahamas is also during the dry season, from December to April.

During the first half of the dry season, you can expect daily average temperatures to range somewhere between 70° F and 80° F. This means you can enjoy pleasantly warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine without risking the sweltering intensity of the summer heat. To understand the best time to enjoy a cruise in the Caribbean, you first need to know how the seasons in the region work. Essentially, this tropical climate experiences two noticeably different seasons – the dry season and the wet season.

With that in mind, we've weighed factors like price and activities to help you figure out the best month for a Caribbean cruise. While most of the season offers moderate fares, if your cruise dates are limited to holiday breaks, be prepared for prices close to double what you'd pay during the few weeks before that. Starting in late November, peak season in the Caribbean takes off again. Holiday cruises fill up quickly, so it’s wise to book as early as possible to get the stateroom, dining time, specialty dining reservations, and shore excursions you want.

Carnival and similar festivals are also celebrated in other Caribbean islands. Exact dates may change depending on the year, so be sure to check if you will be sailing to these islands during Carnival. In rare situations, entire sailings have been cancelled if the path of the storm rules out any possibility of a ship making it in or out of its homeport. First and foremost, Royal Caribbean employs a Chief Meteorologist to track every disturbance and storm out there, and provide guidance to each cruise ship on how to best avoid the storm. Looking at a weather forecast in the summer can initially be a bit disappointing, as you will often see that the forecast shows rain every day.

The southern Caribbean has a lower chance of being impacted by hurricanes, as it mainly lies below the hurricane belt. Therefore, during hurricane season in the fall, you are still likely to see lower prices but have a lower probability of your cruise being affected by a hurricane. Each season offers different advantages and disadvantages in the Caribbean. While there’s not necessarily a bad time to cruise to the Caribbean, the best time for you may depend on what certain seasons offer. The hurricane season runs from June 1 until November 30, but the region has on average few storms in June and November.

A good vacation option during this time is the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao), which are less prone to hurricanes and storms. The peak of the hurricane season in the Caribbean lasts from August to mid-October. If you’re seeking a safe and enjoyable Caribbean cruise during this period, consider the ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao), as they typically remain dry and are rarely affected by hurricanes.

June, July and August temperatures average near 90 degrees throughout the region. While there's a possibility of tropical storms or hurricanes, the Atlantic hurricane season doesn't peak until late August through October. Of course, peak season cruising means higher prices and a winter cruise will cost you more on average than a summer or fall cruise. The cheapest time for a Caribbean cruise is between August and November because school is back in session and the threat of hurricanes and a higher chance of rain. The American Chronicle says July is a good month for cruising the Caribbean, even though it's technically the start of hurricane season.

However, if we had our pick, we would suggest either April or October if you need to fly into a cruise port. The generally good weather and low prices combine to make it a cheap and easy time to sail. As well, even if sailing to the Caribbean, the pools and water on a ship may still be too cool to enjoy fully.

I am a social creature, and the prospect of seven days alone and apart is saddening. Wallace’s stateroom, at least, had a view of the ocean, a kind of cheap eternity. At first glance, I had snubbed the dining and lounge area as a rip-off of a generic airport coffee shop. But during my three days on Icon, I returned to the centrally located space more often than expected.

Eastern adventures to perfect day

It’s the best family holiday in the world – where you’ll have the time of your life, multiple times a day. "We have purposely designed the ship to give more space for people," he said. "We believe, even at 7,500 guests, it won't feel to you like your entire hometown has joined the ship," said Schneider. Jay Schneider, Royal Caribbean's Chief Product Innovation Officer, says the cruise ship is more than just its amenities. There are over 450 specialists on the ship to carry out crucial, preliminary tests with Icon’s main engines, hull, lifeboats, thrusters and more.

Surfside Bites

Other slides include the tallest drop slide at sea, two mat-racing slides and even family raft slides that can accommodate up to four riders. All of the waterslides onboard Icon of the Seas are complimentary. Icon of the Seas will be the first cruise ship for Royal Caribbean to be powered by LNG-fuel, meaning it relies on liquified natural gas. Marvel at lush tropical jungles in Roatán, trek through Mayan ruins in Cozumel – and brave the tallest waterslide in North America at our game-changing private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay. Miami is your gateway to the world’s best family holiday. Dial up action-packed adventures or unplug and chill while you explore some the most sought-after eastern and western Caribbean islands on the planet.

Like the Frightening Bolt, the tallest waterslide to sail. And the Pressure Drop, the first open freefall waterslide on a cruise. Whether it was Hari or Oliver in the Pearl Café or one of the servers at the Lime and Coconut, most of the crew were cheerful and talkative.

A weeklong Caribbean cruise costs about $3,500 for two people in an average stateroom. For those seeking more luxury, the Ultimate Family Townhouse – a three-story suite complete with touchscreen tables and a slide – can go for up to $100,000 per trip. The Royal Loft, aimed at high-rolling adults, offers two bedrooms, a private hot tub, and a spacious balcony starting at $40,000. The ship’s visit to CocoCay is also slated to coincide with the debut of the new adults-only Hideaway Beach expansion on CocoCay, offering guests new ways to relax on the private island.

It’s located forward on the starboard side and offers plenty of padded loungers and a small infinity pool. The Deck 16 Swim and Tonic was another popular spot, as it’s Royal Caribbean’s first swim-up bar at sea. Still, we were able to grab drinks one afternoon without much hassle. Here, cruisers can relax in the pool or on one of the in-pool loungers. I say hurtfully because as a Suite passenger I should be here, though my particular suite is far from the others.

But, the cruise line claims that it can process 1500 passengers in about an hour. So, you shouldn’t be waiting all day, even during summer vacation, to experience the best waterpark at sea. Lastly, the crown jewel of the sports deck is the Category 6 waterpark. Of course, I had to test all the slides for this Icon of the Seas cruise ship review. Finding a spot at one of the pools was never an issue on our sailing. In fact, we were surprised at how many loungers were still available by noontime on a sea day.

Special Restaurants that are Worth the Extra Cost

These include the Overlook Bar with the signature Overlook Spritz. The new Rye and Bean coffee bar serves espresso-infused cocktails and other coffee drinks. The espresso martinis here are a must, especially as a pre-show drink. Of course, the Windjammer Marketplace is still available on Icon of the Seas as well. This staple Royal Caribbean buffet offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day of the cruise.

From that point on, the ship will officially be part of the Royal Caribbean fleet as she makes her way to her homeport in Miami, Florida. Different operational systems are tested during sea trials, including navigational controls, safety and emergency responses, maximum speed, braking, turning, and more. The variety of rooms onboard Icon of the Seas is impressive, with more than 80% offering beds for three passengers or more. Cabins are made for families, though storage space ultimately could be an issue with larger groups, especially with more standard accommodations. Elizabeth graduated from New York University's Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute with her M.A. Growing up, she had the privilege of traveling frequently with her family and fell in love with cruising after sailing on the Oasis of the Seas her freshman year of high school.

Chill Island has 4 Lime and Coconut bars, including the brand-new frozen bar featuring poolside favorites like a Miami Vice. Of course, the other three locations still shake up favorites like the signature Lime & Coconut drink. The first swim-up bar in the Royal Caribbean fleet is the Swim and Tonic. This pool bar serves unique cocktails like the Iconic Gin and Tonic and the Limoncello Tonic.

This trendy and modern space serves up signature cocktails themed after the different Royal Caribbean ships with the Fourteen Hundred in honor of the Icon-class. This bar is the perfect addition to the completely redesigned 2-story Royal Promenade. Royal Caribbean has also elevated its beverage program along with all the new dining. Icon of the Seas has nearly twenty bars, including 10 new establishments. Of course, we made sure to pop into each venue to try at least one signature cocktail. Thankfully, Royal Caribbean did not change the drink prices on Icon of the Seas.

Most of the slides have a maximum weight restriction of 265 pounds. Icon of the Seas is heading to Miami, Florida in January 2024. Royal Caribbean announced that the brand-new ship will be home-ported in Miami at least through April 2025. The cruise line has yet to announce where Icon of the Seas will head after April 2025.

New Year’s Eve Cruise on Carnival

It really starts to fill up around 11 so make sure you head up to the deck by then! As you would expect, the bottom is much more crowded than the top so choose your spot based on how crowded you want to be, but expect that more people will suddenly appear a few minutes before midnight then disappear again. A New Year’s Eve Cruise is the perfect way to ring in the New Year. A vacation and a fun New Year’s Eve party all rolled into one, a Carnival Cruise is a great way to spend your time off around the holiday and an easy way to ensure the best party at midnight. We have taken several New Year’s Eve Cruises on Carnival over the years and they are our favorite way to spend the holiday. SeaDeam Yacht Club’s fastest selling voyages of the year, New Year is spent in the glamorous port of Gustavia, St Barts for both SeaDream I and SeaDream II, with each ship throwing a lavish party.

EVEN ⇨ MORE ⇨ FLAVOR ⇨ THIS ⇨ WAY ⇨

Enjoy selections like seafood bisque and crab-stuffed lobster tail imperial — all served with an elegant flair that pays proper tribute to the beauty of the ocean from which so much fun, and flavor, arises. In 2001, the food options on Carnival Inspiration were limited. My husband and I ate dinner every night in the ship’s main dining room, sharing a table with the same three couples. (We all connected pretty quickly and enjoyed each other’s company; it’s one of the things I adore about cruising). While the Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners can be remarkably similar, those holidays are a month apart and few guests are actually cruising for both holidays. What better way to celebrate the holidays and sporting events but on a Carnival Cruise with family and friends.

Welcome the new year, Carnival-style… and you’re gonna have photos to share! Hashtag yours #CarnivalCruise and #HappyNewYear to submit.

We call Carnival Celebration®'s onboard burger spot Guy’s Burger Joint™. We teamed up with Guy Fieri to design not just the burgers and fries, but to help bring in the kind of rustic atmosphere you’d find at a roadside burger shack somewhere off a coastal highway. All signs point to ambiance — and serious flavor — so try a burger dressed up the way Guy likes it, or take it off-roading… to the nearby topping bar, where you can make it your own. A New Year’s Eve Cruise on Carnival is a great way to ring in the New Year. There is a giant party that you stroll to when you are ready.

Every performances is built on amazing songs you know and love, presented like you’ve never seen before. Then they sometimes leave the stage behind, like in The Most Magnificent Circus and We Are One where they soar above the audience. Or Color My World, a show where they break into actual live-graffiti painting, right on stage. On New Year's Eve, Viking passengers will be treated to celebrations including live music (with "Auld Lang Syne"), dancing and a midnight toast. Live music, gifts and surprises will continue until the countdown to the New Year. Celebrity throws a fun and vibrant party to ring in the New Year, with a live band, noise makers, holiday favors and a complimentary Champagne toast.

– on my first real “adult” vacation, and I couldn’t wait to book my next cruise. Passengers who stay in the Havana Experience access the private area via keycard and have their own personal lounge, which feels similar to the Havana Bar. They also have a private pool area and bar, with exclusive entertainment. At the time, I wasn’t aware of any specialty dining options, and, at 25 years old and still early in my professional career, I would have struggled to afford anything beyond the cost of the cruise itself. I’m struck by how similar Grand Central is to what’s offered on AIDA, a German cruise line (owned by Carnival Corporation) that appeals to families. I sailed AIDAperla in 2018 and was impressed with the interactive way the space was used, from kids clubs activities to karaoke.

A special “celebration cake” with a pecan brownie, crispy peanut butter feuillentine, and white chocolate mousse is offered for dessert. I will also shout-out to the Cruise Director and entertainment staff (best I've seen!!), our wait staff (Andre, Louis, Gordana), and our room steward (Anatole). I have no complains about the staff and crew of the ship -- they were all incredible.

On New Year’s Eve, when the ball will be raised to the top of One Times Square for all to see. “We’re bringing the signature Carnival fun back to Times Square in celebration of our remarkable achievements this year,” said Josh Weinstein, President & CEO and Chief Climate Officer of Carnival Corporation & plc. The biggest wow-factor is probably the BOLT roller coaster.

At Summer Landing, fun this cool is literally always in season. New Year's Eve celebrations on Costa kick off with a lavish six-course dinner, followed by a holiday party with live music and a DJ. A countdown clock will be displayed in all lounges and on the poolside movie screen.

Insanely talented musicians will be playing sweet music all across the ship. So make sure you explore every corner, because you never know what you’re going to discover. Guy’s Burger Joint, Big Chicken, Pizza Pirate, soft-serve ice cream at Swirls, and other casual dining options will also be available (hours may vary), and guests can also partake of room service for more private dining or snacks.

Carnival goes all out with live music, DJs, and a dazzling display of fireworks over the open sea. It's a spectacle like no other, where you can dance the night away under the starry sky, surrounded by fellow revelers from all over the world. The festive atmosphere is contagious, making it easy to make new friends and share the excitement of counting down to midnight together. When you’re cruising on Carnival Celebration there’s just so much destination to be found… even right on board. That’s because here, in The Gateway zone, “international flavor” isn’t just an expression, but a way of life! Design, décor, cuisine and even the entertainment is inspired by grand locations, landmarks from around the world.

Carnival Jubilee™ plays host to a lineup of shows like Soulbound and its spooky, atmospheric R&B and Visual Symphony, with innovative LED walls and special effects three decks high. Let’s see what else… debuting right here there’s Dear Future Husband, an interactive pop-wedding adventure. Of course there’s also Celestial Strings, which reimagines rock and pop favorites as symphonic classical compositions, and We Are One, which has performers sometimes leaving the stage behind, actually soaring above the audience.
